The Four Primary States of the Nervous System


The nervous system’s survival responses fall into four main categories: fight, flight, freeze and fawn. Each state produces distinct feelings and behaviors.


Fight: Agitation and Irritability


The fight response prepares the body to confront danger. When in this state, people often feel angry, frustrated, or easily irritated. Their muscles may tense, and their heart rate increases. This state can make it hard to stay calm or patient.


For example, a person stuck in fight mode might find themselves arguing more or feeling aggressive toward others, even when the situation doesn’t warrant it.


Flight: Restlessness and Anxiety


Flight triggers the urge to escape danger. It causes restlessness, nervous energy, and anxiety. People may pace, fidget, or feel unable to sit still. Their minds race with worry or fear.


Someone in flight mode might avoid social situations or feel overwhelmed by decisions, as their nervous system signals a need to get away from perceived threats.


Freeze: Shutdown and Numbness


Freeze is a shutdown response when fight or flight feels impossible. The body becomes still, and emotions may feel numb or disconnected. People might feel stuck, unable to move forward or make choices.


For example, a person experiencing freeze might feel emotionally shut down during stressful events, unable to express feelings or take action.


Fawn: People-Pleasing and Self-Abandonment


The fawn response develops when the nervous system learns that staying safe depends on pleasing others, avoiding conflict, or putting other people's needs first. People in this state may have difficulty saying no, setting boundaries, or expressing their own thoughts and feelings. They often prioritize keeping the peace, even at the expense of their own well-being.


For example, a person in fawn mode might automatically agree to requests they don't have the time or energy for, apologize excessively, or ignore their own needs to avoid disappointing someone else. While these behaviors may have once helped them feel safe, they can lead to resentment, burnout, and a weakened sense of self over time.

These Responses Are Biological, Not Choices


It’s important to understand that fight, flight, and freeze are automatic biological reactions. They are not signs of weakness or poor character. The nervous system evolved to protect us, and these responses happen without conscious thought.
